**Prayagraj, India** – The appointment of Bollywood actress Mamta Kulkarni as a Mahamandaleshwar (a high-ranking spiritual leader) in the Kinnar Akhada (a monastic order for transgender individuals) has ignited a firestorm of controversy.
While some lauded the decision, others strongly criticized it, raising concerns about the sanctity of religious traditions and the potential for exploitation. Swami Anand Swarup Maharaj, Peethadhishwar of the Shambhavi Peeth, condemned the Kinnar Akhada’s recognition at the previous Kumbh Mela as a “mahapap” (great sin) and accused the appointment of being a “sham” designed to exploit Kulkarni’s fame for commercial gain. He further stated that the appointment goes against the tenets of Hinduism.
In contrast, Ravindra Puri, president of the Akhara Parishad (Council of Akharas), extended his blessings and congratulations to Kulkarni, emphasizing that renunciation can come at any time and from any background. He expressed hope that if Kulkarni adheres to the true meaning of a Mahamandaleshwar, it would elevate the spiritual tradition of India.
The Juna Akhara’s Acharya Mahamandaleshwar Swami Avadhesanand Giri affirmed that everyone has the right to renunciation, adding that the Kinnar Akhara, registered in 2019 as a branch of the Juna Akhara, has the autonomy to appoint its members. Other Akharas expressed varying opinions, with some emphasizing the need for rigorous vetting and adherence to traditional standards before bestowing such a title. Concerns were raised about the lack of a formal process and the potential for individuals to seek the title merely for recognition rather than genuine spiritual commitment.
Kulkarni’s past, including past controversies and alleged involvement with the underworld, also came under scrutiny. However, some defended her appointment, stating that past indiscretions should not disqualify someone from seeking spiritual fulfillment.
Kulkarni performed Pind Daan (a Hindu ritual) at Sangam Ghat in Prayagraj, signifying her acceptance of the new role, and will now be known as Yamai Mamta Nand Giri. The controversy surrounding her appointment continues to fuel debate about the intersection of faith, celebrity, and traditional religious hierarchies.
