Prayagraj, India – Former Bollywood actress Mamta Kulkarni has been ordained as a Mahamandaleshwar (a high-ranking title in Hinduism) by the Kinnar Akhara (a monastic order for transgender individuals) at the Kumbh Mela. This has, however, sparked controversy.
Kulkarni, who has been estranged from the film industry for years and dedicated herself to spirituality, took sannyas (renunciation) after a two-hour ceremony on the Sangam ghat. She was given the new name Shree Yamai Mamtanand Giri. The ceremony included a self-performed Pind Daan (ritual offering).
However, Mahamandaleshwar Himangi Sakhi of the Kinnar Akhara has questioned the decision, stating that the Akhara is specifically for transgender individuals and questioning why a cisgender woman was given the title. Sakhi’s statement raises concerns about the inclusion criteria of the Kinnar Akhara and whether its purpose is being diluted.
Kulkarni maintains that she underwent rigorous penance for many years and is committed to a life of dharma (righteousness), stating she will not return to Bollywood. The actress was ordained by Acharya Mahamandaleshwar Lakshmi Narayan Tripathi. The event was attended by numerous sadhus and Mahamandaleshwars.
The bestowing of this prestigious title on a cisgender woman by a transgender monastic order raises significant questions about the traditions and practices of the Kinnar Akhara and the broader implications for religious titles within Hinduism.
