Sat Jan 25 15:07:32 UTC 2025: ## Bollywood Actress Mamta Kulkarni Becomes Mahamandaleshwar, Sparks Controversy

**Prayagraj, India** – Former Bollywood actress Mamta Kulkarni has embraced a new life as a Mahamandaleshwar, a high-ranking title within a Hindu monastic order. This transition, however, has ignited a firestorm of controversy.

Kulkarni, known for her 90s Bollywood films like “Aashik Awara,” announced her new spiritual path after a 22-year period of asceticism. She was initiated into the Kinnar Akhada (a monastic order for transgender individuals), receiving the title of Shri Yamai Mamta Nandgiri. In an exclusive interview, Kulkarni expressed immense joy and a sense of fulfillment, stating that her transformation feels like “a girl becoming a doctor after years of university study.”

She explicitly stated that her marriage prospects are now irrelevant, as they are ended by her religious life. She chose the Kinnar Akhada for its independence and freedom of expression. The Akhada allows its members to engage in various activities, including participation in religious gatherings and performances, a freedom she values.

However, the appointment has been met with fierce opposition from several saints at the Kumbh Mela. Swami Anand Swarup Maharaj, the Peethadhishwar of Shambhavi Peeth, condemned the Kinnar Akhada’s recognition, calling it a “mahapaap” (grave sin) and accusing the new appointment of trivializing the Kumbh Mela. He voiced concerns about potential exploitation of Kulkarni’s fame for financial gain.

Kulkarni’s past is also a matter of public record, with previous connections to international drug trafficking alleged but never proven in court.

The controversy surrounding Kulkarni’s appointment highlights the ongoing tensions between traditional religious practices and evolving social norms within Hinduism. Her transformation from Bollywood star to religious leader remains a topic of significant debate and public interest.
