Thu Jan 23 19:45:16 UTC 2025: ## Kochi Corporation Accused of Waste Management Failures at Brahmapuram Plant

**KOCHI, January 24, 2025** – The opposition United Democratic Front (UDF) has accused the Kochi Corporation of mismanagement at its Brahmapuram solid waste treatment plant, alleging a resurgence of untreated waste despite significant spending.

Following a site visit Thursday, UDF councillors Antony Kureethara and M.G. Aristotle claimed the situation contradicts the corporation’s assertions that crores of rupees have been invested in upgrading the facility post a major fire in March 2023. They observed untreated waste piling up near the windrow compost plant, with trucks unloading waste onto roads due to inaccessibility, creating further problems.

The UDF further alleged a drastic increase in waste treatment costs, from ₹452 per tonne to ₹2,500 per tonne, without any visible improvement. Waste is overflowing onto the road, despite the increased expenditure, they stated.

Health Standing Committee chairperson T.K. Ashraf acknowledged limitations in processing waste at Brahmapuram. He cited the limited capacity of the current black soldier fly-based treatment plant (75 tonnes/day) compared to the 150-200 tonnes of waste received daily. He also confirmed the abandonment of a proposed windrow compositing plant but expressed hope that a new compressed biogas plant, under construction by BPCL-Kochi Refinery, will improve efficiency upon completion.
