Fri Jan 24 00:19:35 IST 2025: **Southport Killer Sentenced to 52 Years for Triple Murder of Girls at Dance Class**
LONDON – Axel Rudakubana, 18, has been sentenced to a minimum of 52 years in prison for the murder of three young girls at a Taylor Swift-themed dance class in Southport last July. Judge Julian Goose described Rudakubana’s actions as an attempt at mass murder, stating the teenager “wanted to try and carry out mass murder of innocent, happy young girls.” While a whole-life sentence was not possible due to Rudakubana’s age at the time of the crime (17), the judge indicated it is highly unlikely he will ever be released.
Rudakubana pleaded guilty to the murders of six-year-old Bebe King, seven-year-old Elsie Dot Stancombe, and nine-year-old Alice da Silva Aguiar, as well as ten counts of attempted murder, manufacturing ricin, and possessing an al-Qaeda training manual. The prosecution revealed Rudakubana, born in Cardiff to Rwandan parents, had a long-standing obsession with violence, despite lacking any discernible political or religious motive.
The attack sparked a wave of anti-migrant protests fueled by inaccurate social media reports falsely claiming Rudakubana was a recent asylum seeker. This led to weeks of clashes between far-right activists and police across the UK.
Following the sentencing, Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced a public inquiry into the events leading up to the attack, acknowledging failures in addressing Rudakubana’s violent tendencies, which had been reported to authorities in the years prior. He stated, “After one of the most harrowing moments in our country’s history, we owe it to these innocent young girls and all those affected to deliver the change that they deserve.” Rudakubana was not present for the sentencing due to disruptive behavior during earlier proceedings.
