**Pune, India** – A cluster of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) cases in Pune, India, has been linked to norovirus and Campylobacter bacteria, according to the Indian Council of Medical Research–National Institute of Virology (ICMR-NIV). At least 67 GBS cases have been reported, with 13 patients requiring ventilator support. However, health officials state that all patients are currently stable.
The ICMR-NIV identified the viruses and bacteria in samples from several GBS patients. The outbreak, concentrated primarily in the Sinhagad area, prompted a rapid response team investigation. Samples were initially analyzed at Poona Hospital and Research Centre, where Campylobacter jejuni was detected.
GBS is an autoimmune disorder where the body’s immune system attacks its own nerves, often following a gastrointestinal or flu-like illness. Norovirus, a common cause of acute gastroenteritis, has been increasingly linked to neurological complications, including GBS. The virus spreads through contaminated food, water, or surfaces.
The age range of those affected is broad, with 11 children under 10, 12 teenagers, and patients ranging up to the 70-80 age group. The majority of cases (39) are from rural areas of Pune, with others from the city and Pimpri Chinchwad.
Doctors are urging vigilance and caution, emphasizing the need to identify and address the source of water contamination to prevent further cases. The investigation continues.
