**Bengaluru, India –** A 39-year-old cab driver, Manjunath, died Thursday after setting himself on fire outside his estranged wife’s residence in Nagarbhavi, Bengaluru. Police report that Manjunath, a resident of Kunigal, had been separated from his wife for two years and was attempting to persuade her to withdraw a divorce petition. The couple, married since 2013, have a 9-year-old son.
According to police, Manjunath’s wife refused his request, citing significant hardship during their marriage. He subsequently doused himself with petrol and ignited himself in the corridor of her home, succumbing to his injuries at the scene. Manjunath’s parents have accused his wife of being responsible for his death. The Jnanabharthi police have registered a case and are investigating.
This tragic incident follows a series of recent suicides in Bengaluru linked to marital disputes and divorce settlements. The case echoes the highly publicized suicide of techie Atul Subhash, who allegedly took his own life due to his wife’s demands for a ₹3 crore divorce settlement. Another suicide, that of a police officer allegedly due to similar circumstances, was reported earlier this month. The recent spate of suicides has sparked public outrage and calls for greater attention to the pressures faced by individuals navigating difficult divorces.
