**Jalgaon, Maharashtra –** A tragic train accident in Jalgaon district, Maharashtra, has claimed the lives of 13 people, with at least four identified as Nepali nationals. The incident occurred Wednesday when passengers aboard the Pushpak Express, panicking over a suspected – but ultimately unconfirmed – fire, jumped from the train onto an adjacent track. They were then struck by the oncoming Karnataka Express.
The panic caused passengers to pull the emergency chain, bringing the Pushpak Express to a halt. However, this resulted in several passengers leaping from the train, directly into the path of the approaching Karnataka Express. At least nine others sustained injuries. A senior railway official stated that no evidence of a fire was found on the train.
Among the deceased are a minor boy and two women from Nepal. The Railway Ministry has announced compensation of ₹1.5 lakh (approximately $18,000 USD) for the families of each victim, ₹50,000 (approximately $6,000 USD) for seriously injured individuals, and ₹5,000 (approximately $600 USD) for those with minor injuries. The Maharashtra state government has also pledged ₹5 lakh (approximately $60,000 USD) to the families of the deceased and will cover all medical expenses for the injured.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis have both expressed their condolences and offered assistance to those affected by the accident. Investigations are underway to determine the exact cause of the incident.
