Fri Jan 24 12:32:50 UTC 2025: ## India Condemns Disruption of “Emergency” Film Screenings in UK by Pro-Khalistani Groups

**London/New Delhi, January 24, 2025** – The Indian government has expressed deep concern over the disruption of screenings of the film “Emergency” in the UK by pro-Khalistani elements. Multiple incidents have been reported across the country, forcing cinema chains to pull the film from several theaters.

According to External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, India expects those responsible for the disturbances to be held accountable. He emphasized that freedom of speech cannot be selectively applied and those obstructing it must face consequences. India is consistently raising these concerns with the UK government regarding violent protests and intimidation by anti-India groups, Jaiswal added.

The disruptions, which began last Friday following the film’s release, involved masked protesters bursting into screenings and threatening audience members. Conservative MP Bob Blackman detailed an incident in Harrow, northwest London, where “masked Khalistani terrorists” interrupted a screening. Similar incidents were reported in Wolverhampton, Birmingham, Slough, Staines, and Manchester, leading Vue and Cineworld cinemas to cancel many screenings.

Blackman urged the UK Home Secretary to intervene, highlighting that while the film is controversial, his constituents have the right to view it without intimidation. He defended the right to peaceful protest but condemned the violent disruption of screenings.

Leader of the Commons Lucy Powell acknowledged the concerns raised, assuring the House of Commons that the government will provide an update on the situation. The film, directed by and starring Kangana Ranaut as Indira Gandhi, has been criticized by some British Sikh groups as “anti-Sikh,” fueling the protests. Videos of the disruptions have circulated on social media. The Indian government is pressing the UK to take decisive action against those responsible for the violence.
