**Pune, India** – A surge in Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) cases has prompted a health alert in Pune. The number of confirmed GBS cases has risen to 67, with eight new suspected cases reported on Thursday alone, according to the state health department. A Rapid Response Team (RRT) is investigating the sudden increase.
Of the 67 cases, 43 are women and 24 are men. Thirteen patients currently require ventilator support, stated Pune Municipal Corporation assistant health officer Dr. Vaishali Jadhav.
GBS is a rare neurological disorder where the body’s immune system attacks the nerves, causing muscle weakness, numbness, and tingling, often starting in the feet and legs. Other symptoms can include unsteady walking, difficulty climbing stairs, double vision, rapid heart rate, severe cramping, and low blood pressure. In severe cases, paralysis can occur.
While the exact cause remains unknown, GBS often follows a respiratory or digestive tract infection. Potential triggers may include bacterial or viral infections, recent vaccinations, surgery, or neuropathy. The condition is not contagious or hereditary.
The RRT is actively investigating the cause of the outbreak in Pune, focusing on potential water contamination. They are surveying homes in affected areas, collecting water samples, and interviewing residents.
GBS is a potentially life-threatening condition with no known cure. Treatment typically involves immunotherapy, such as plasma exchange, and hospitalization, particularly for those experiencing breathing difficulties. Those experiencing symptoms are urged to seek immediate medical attention.
