Fri Jan 24 12:56:01 UTC 2025: ## Eight-Year-Old Undergoes Rare Tracheal Tumor Surgery in Coimbatore
**COIMBATORE, January 24, 2025** – An eight-year-old boy from Theni district has successfully undergone surgery for a rare tracheal schwannoma, a neurogenic tumor affecting the trachea, at GKNM Hospital. The boy, a Class IV student, had suffered from severe breathing difficulties for two years, initially misdiagnosed as asthma. A CT scan revealed the rare intraluminal tracheal mass.
A three-hour procedure was performed by a team of doctors, successfully removing the tumor and reconstructing the boy’s trachea. According to Dr. Vijayakumar Raju, Director of Paediatric Cardiac Surgery at GKNM Hospital, this is one of the rarest medical cases ever recorded, with only 51 documented cases globally, all in adults.
The life-saving surgery was made possible by financial support from The Hans Foundation, as the boy’s father, a temporary driver earning ₹8,000 per month, could not afford the procedure. The surgical team included Dr. Raju, S. Naveen, Kaushik Jothinath, Rangachari Srivatsan, and Rajalakshmi M. The boy has since recovered and been discharged from the hospital.
