NEW YORK, NY – Ross Ulbricht, the founder of the now-defunct dark web marketplace Silk Road, has thanked former President Donald Trump for his pardon, calling it an “amazing blessing.” In a video message posted on X, Ulbricht, 40, expressed overwhelming relief after serving over 11 years of a double life sentence plus 40 years for crimes related to the online marketplace.
Ulbricht’s conviction stemmed from allegations that Silk Road facilitated $183 million in drug sales using Bitcoin. Prosecutors argued he was a criminal mastermind, even alleging involvement in murder-for-hire plots, though he was never convicted on those charges. However, Ulbricht’s supporters, including libertarians and cryptocurrency enthusiasts, argued his sentence was excessive and that he was unfairly punished for the actions of others. They claimed he was a scapegoat. His legal team contended that he relinquished control of the site early in its operation.
Trump, in issuing the pardon, called Ulbricht’s sentence “ridiculous” and linked the prosecution to individuals he described as “lunatics” who weaponized the government against him. The pardon fulfilled a campaign promise to those who advocated for Ulbricht’s release.
The pardon has been met with mixed reactions. While some Republicans praised the decision, several Democratic lawmakers criticized it. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto called it a “slap in the face” to families affected by drug-related deaths allegedly linked to Silk Road. The Senator demanded an explanation from Trump on how the pardon enhances national safety.
Ulbricht, in his message, stated his intention to spend time with family, hinting at future public statements. He characterized his release as a victory not just for himself, but for those who champion freedom and second chances.
