THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, Kerala – January 24, 2025 – The Kerala government announced plans to utilize ₹712.98 crore from the Chief Minister’s Distress Relief Fund (CMDRF) for the rehabilitation of those affected by the devastating landslides in Wayanad’s Mundakkai and Chooralmala regions. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan made the announcement in the Assembly on Thursday, responding to questions regarding the rehabilitation package.
The project aims to provide comprehensive resettlement, encompassing the construction of a model township in Nedumpala and Elstone estates. Each house in the township will be 1,000 sq ft, with the option for an additional floor. Amenities planned for the township include an anganwadi, post office, hospital, community hub, garbage processing facility, and park. Families preferring to live outside the township will receive ₹15 lakh each.
Funding will also come from the State Disaster Relief Fund (SDRF), sponsorships, CSR initiatives, and anticipated central assistance based on the Post Disaster Needs Assessment (PDNA) report. A meeting with sponsors committed to building homes has already taken place, and a township model was presented.
The central government has declared the Wayanad disaster as one of extreme severity, leading to expectations of further financial assistance. The Chief Minister assured that the rehabilitation project will be completed in a timely manner.
