**Mumbai, India** – Acclaimed filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma, known for his works like “Satya” and “Rangeela,” has been sentenced to three months imprisonment by the Andheri Magistrate Court for a seven-year-old cheque bounce case. The court issued a non-bailable warrant for his arrest after Varma failed to appear for the verdict on Tuesday.
The case, filed in 2018 by a company named Shree, involved a bounced cheque for ₹238,000 (approximately $2900 USD) issued by Varma’s firm to a former employee. While the filmmaker claims the case is not about the relatively small sum of money, but rather about resisting what he calls an attempt at exploitation and fabrication, the court found him guilty under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act.
In addition to the jail sentence, Varma has been ordered to pay ₹372,000 (approximately $4500 USD) in compensation to the complainant within three months, or face an additional three months of imprisonment. Magistrate YP Pujari clarified that Varma was not eligible for any reduction in sentence due to lack of prior custody. While he was granted bail in June 2022, this was after the trial commenced. The filmmaker has reportedly faced financial difficulties in recent years, including having to sell his office during the COVID-19 pandemic.
