Tue Jan 21 09:32:37 UTC 2025: ## Government Unveils “Humphrey”: AI to Speed Up Civil Service

**London, UK** – The UK government has launched a new artificial intelligence initiative dubbed “Humphrey,” a cheeky nod to the famously obstructive bureaucrat from the sitcom *Yes Minister*. The AI system, announced Tuesday by Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s Labour administration, aims to dramatically improve the efficiency of the civil service and unlock significant cost savings.

The Department for Science, Innovation and Technology claims Humphrey will help achieve £45 billion ($55 billion) in savings by streamlining processes and improving public services. The initiative focuses on tackling the inefficiency of information sharing and collaboration within the public sector.

Key features of Humphrey include AI tools that analyze thousands of consultation responses, a task currently costing taxpayers around £100,000 per project and taking months to complete. The AI will provide policymakers with concise summaries. Additional tools will offer automated transcription and summarization services for meetings and policy documents, as well as provide quick access to relevant legislation.

Science Minister Peter Kyle stated that the government will leverage technology to “bear down hard” on the inefficient practices within the public sector. The rollout of Humphrey aligns with Starmer’s broader ambition to make the UK an AI superpower and boost economic growth by improving efficiency across public services, from education and healthcare to infrastructure maintenance.
