JUBA, South Sudan – The ongoing conflict in Sudan has forced over one million people to seek refuge in neighboring South Sudan since April 2023, according to a joint statement released Tuesday by the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM). The majority of these refugees are South Sudanese nationals who had previously fled their country’s civil war.
The influx, primarily through the Joda border crossing, has overwhelmed South Sudan’s resources. Transit centers designed for a fraction of the current population are now severely overcrowded, with over 16,000 refugees residing in facilities built for under 5,000. The UN warns that healthcare, water, and shelter are dangerously overstretched, appealing for increased international support for both refugees and the communities hosting them.
The conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) continues to escalate, with both sides accused of war crimes, including targeting civilians. The war has already claimed at least 20,000 lives, and a staggering 25 million Sudanese – half the country’s population – are facing severe hunger and require urgent humanitarian assistance. The situation has reached famine levels in several areas, including Sudan’s largest displacement camp. The UN’s Famine Review Committee confirmed famine conditions in multiple locations across the country. The international community is urged to act swiftly to avert further catastrophe.
