Tue Jan 21 18:57:36 UTC 2025: ## Mexico Rejects Trump’s Plan to Rename Gulf of Mexico
**Mexico City –** Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has dismissed U.S. President Donald Trump’s executive order to rename the Gulf of Mexico the “Gulf of America,” stating that Mexico and the rest of the world will continue to use the established name.
Trump announced his intention to rename the Gulf during his inaugural address and subsequently signed an executive order directing the U.S. Secretary of the Interior to make the change within 30 days. The order affects the U.S. continental shelf bordering Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida.
Sheinbaum, in her daily press briefing, responded with a chuckle, highlighting Mexico’s sovereignty and the need for dialogue with the U.S. She emphasized that, regardless of the U.S. designation, the body of water will remain the Gulf of Mexico internationally. This latest exchange follows an earlier proposal by Trump to rename the Gulf, which Sheinbaum responded to with a suggestion to rename North America “América Mexicana.” The differing names for the Rio Grande/Rio Bravo were also mentioned as a point of ongoing divergence between the two nations.
