Wed Jan 22 04:10:28 UTC 2025: ## Mexico Rejects Trump’s Attempt to Rename Gulf of Mexico

**Mexico City, Mexico –** Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has firmly rejected a recent executive order by former President Donald Trump attempting to rename the Gulf of Mexico the “Gulf of America.” Trump issued the order as part of a broader initiative to “restore names that honor American greatness,” also seeking to reinstate “Mount McKinley” for Denali.

Sheinbaum stated that while Trump can refer to the body of water as he wishes within US borders, the name “Gulf of Mexico” will remain the internationally recognized designation.

Trump’s order, titled “Restoring Names That Honor American Greatness,” focuses specifically on the portion of the Gulf of Mexico within the U.S. marine boundary, not the entire gulf. The executive order highlights the gulf’s economic significance to the United States, citing its substantial oil and gas reserves, thriving fisheries, and vital role in tourism and maritime industries. Trump directed the Secretary of the Interior to update the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) accordingly within 30 days.

However, Sheinbaum’s rejection underscores the limited scope of Trump’s action. The name change, even if implemented within the US GNIS, is unlikely to alter the internationally established nomenclature for the Gulf of Mexico.
