Wed Jan 22 12:21:44 UTC 2025: ## Israeli Military Operation in Jenin Leaves 10 Palestinians Dead, Thousands Displaced

**Jenin, Occupied West Bank –** A large-scale Israeli military operation in Jenin, in the occupied West Bank, has resulted in the deaths of at least 10 Palestinians and the displacement of approximately 2,000 families. The operation, which began on Tuesday, continues into a second day, with Israeli forces bulldozing roads and destroying infrastructure within the city and its refugee camp.

The Israeli military stated that the operation targeted “terror infrastructure sites” and involved the dismantling of explosives. However, Palestinian officials and residents paint a grim picture. Jenin governor Kamal Abu al-Rub described the situation as “very difficult,” reporting that roads leading to the refugee camp and the Jenin Government Hospital have been blocked. He also stated that approximately 20 people were detained in nearby villages.

Eyewitnesses, such as Jenin resident Adel Besher, described chaotic scenes, recounting his inability to reach his home due to the ongoing violence and the presence of numerous injured civilians, including medical personnel. He reported that Israeli forces fired on anyone attempting to approach the injured.

The operation follows a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and comes after weeks of increased tension in Jenin, where the Palestinian Authority had been conducting its own security operation. The UNRWA, the United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees, described the Jenin camp as “nearly uninhabitable” due to the ongoing displacement, with approximately 2,000 families affected since mid-December.

International condemnation of the operation has been swift. UN Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese condemned Israel’s actions, using strong language to describe the situation. Similar condemnation has come from various other sources and individuals.

The Israeli military actions extend beyond Jenin, with raids reported in other West Bank locations, including Deir Sammit and Aida camp. These actions included home raids and arrests, adding to the escalation of violence in the region. Increased security measures at checkpoints across the West Bank have also been reported, causing significant traffic disruptions.

The ongoing operation underscores the continued volatility in the West Bank, following months of intensified conflict. Since the start of the Gaza war on October 7, 2023, nearly 900 Palestinians have been killed in the West Bank, and over 9,700 arrested, according to local sources.
