Wed Jan 22 13:08:22 UTC 2025: **BSNL Launches 4G Service in Tirunelveli, Promises Speedy Thoothukudi Rollout**
TIRUNELVELI, January 22, 2025 – Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) officially launched its 4G mobile service in Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu on Tuesday, activating 80 sites across the city and surrounding areas. Existing BSNL customers can upgrade to 4G SIM cards free of charge at service centers.
The launch follows significant investment in infrastructure, including upgraded backhaul speeds using MAAN (MPLS-IP-based Access and Aggregation Network) transmission equipment. BSNL officials are currently addressing minor signal strength issues in some areas.
Further expansion is planned, with 65 new sites identified in Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, and Tenkasi districts. The company aims to launch 4G service in Thoothukudi before the end of January, describing it as a “Republic Day gift” to its subscribers.
Notably, BSNL has deployed indigenously developed 4G equipment, creating a 5G-ready network. This means a future 5G upgrade will only require software updates, eliminating the need for expensive hardware replacements.
BSNL officials are optimistic about attracting new subscribers from competitors, citing its competitive pricing and the Mobile Number Portability (MNP) scheme. The company anticipates a significant increase in subscriber base following the 4G service launch and subsequent expansion.
