Tue Jan 21 21:51:02 IST 2025: ## Bangladesh’s Top Diplomat to Visit China Amidst Political Upheaval
**Beijing, January 21, 2025** – Md Touhid Hossain, advisor for Foreign Affairs of Bangladesh’s interim government, will undertake a high-level visit to China from January 20th to 24th, the Chinese Foreign Ministry announced Friday. This marks the highest-level visit from the interim government to China since former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina fled to India following widespread protests last August. Ms. Hasina’s government was subsequently replaced by an interim administration led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus.
Mr. Hossain’s visit will include meetings with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun stated that China is committed to strengthening ties with Bangladesh, enhancing political trust, and deepening cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative. The spokesperson added that the visit aims to further enhance the China-Bangladesh comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership.
The visit follows previous engagements by China with both the opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and a delegation of Islamic parties, including the Jamaat-e-Islami, since the interim government took power. Ms. Hasina’s visit to China just days before the protests that led to her government’s downfall adds a layer of complexity to the current diplomatic interactions.
