Tue Jan 21 10:10:00 UTC 2025: ## Georgia Governor Declares State of Emergency Ahead of Major Winter Storm

**Atlanta, GA –** Governor Brian Kemp declared a state of emergency for Georgia on Monday, in anticipation of a significant winter storm set to hit the state on Tuesday. The storm is expected to bring dangerously cold temperatures, heavy snow, and potentially freezing rain to much of the state.

A Winter Storm Watch is in effect for 128 counties, encompassing South Georgia, most of Central Georgia, and the I-85 corridor in Metro Atlanta. Snow accumulations of up to two inches are predicted, with the potential for up to a quarter-inch of ice in Southeast Georgia. Temperatures are expected to plummet into the teens and twenties on Wednesday morning, with any melted snow refreezing overnight.

The state of emergency allows the Georgia Emergency Management and Homeland Security Agency (GEMA/HS) to activate the State Operations Center and mobilize resources. Up to 250 Georgia National Guard troops may be deployed for preparation, response, and recovery efforts. The emergency order also prohibits price gouging and temporarily relaxes regulations for commercial vehicles transporting essential supplies.

State offices in Atlanta will be closed on Tuesday, with employees working remotely. Other state agencies have the discretion to close offices and allow remote work. Numerous businesses and schools have already announced closures.

The FOX 5 Storm Team has declared Tuesday a Storm Alert Day, noting this is only the second time such an alert has been issued in recent months. Meteorologist Jonathan Stacey highlighted that the I-85 corridor will likely serve as a dividing line for snowfall, with areas south and east expected to receive the heaviest accumulations. He emphasized that while this storm is primarily expected to bring snow, rather than a mix of sleet and freezing rain, sub-freezing temperatures will cause any melted snow to refreeze.

Residents are urged to prepare for dangerously cold wind chills and potential travel disruptions. The FOX 5 Storm Team advises residents to monitor weather updates closely for potential changes in the forecast.
