**COIMBATORE, January 21, 2025** – A house built on encroached land near Sanganur stream in Coimbatore collapsed overnight, causing no injuries as the occupant had vacated the premises. The structure, owned by Suresh, partially collapsed while work was underway to construct a retaining wall for the canal as part of a ₹79 crore project.
Suresh had ignored a prior eviction notice from the City Corporation, leaving the partially demolished house behind in the hopes of securing alternate land. The Corporation had provided ample time for residents to vacate the encroached land, even cutting off water and power supplies. Other residents had demolished their illegal structures.
The retaining wall construction, part of a larger canal project between Mettupalayam and Sathyamangalam highways, resumed after the evacuations. The first phase, covering two out of 2.5 km and costing ₹49 crore, is now complete. The incident highlights the ongoing efforts to reclaim encroached land along the Sanganur stream.
