Tue Jan 21 03:27:43 UTC 2025: ## Trump Revokes Biden’s Electric Vehicle Mandate on Inauguration Day
**Washington, D.C. -** On his first day in office, President Donald Trump moved to dismantle his predecessor’s electric vehicle (EV) initiative. In an executive order, Trump rescinded a 2021 executive order by President Joe Biden that aimed for 50% of new vehicle sales in the U.S. to be electric by 2030. While not legally binding, Biden’s target had garnered support from both domestic and international automakers.
Trump’s actions include halting the distribution of unspent funds for EV charging stations from a $5 billion government program. He also called for an end to a waiver allowing states to adopt zero-emission vehicle rules by 2035 and hinted at eliminating EV tax credits.
Furthermore, the Trump administration will review stricter emissions regulations that would mandate a significant increase in EV sales by 2032. Crucially, Trump’s order targets the repeal of a waiver granted to California, adopted by 11 other states, allowing them to ban the sale of gasoline-only vehicles by 2035. The administration will also examine the elimination of what Trump terms “unfair subsidies” favoring EVs.
This reversal of policy aligns with Trump’s campaign promises to boost domestic oil production and roll back Biden’s clean energy initiatives. While Biden had resisted setting a date for ending the sale of combustion engine vehicles, Trump has made it clear he intends to significantly curtail the growth of the EV market in the United States.
