Tue Jan 21 05:16:36 UTC 2025: **Trump Reverses Obama’s Decision, Renames Alaska’s Denali to Mount McKinley**

ANCHORAGE, ALASKA – In a controversial move, President Donald Trump has signed an executive order renaming North America’s highest peak, Denali, back to Mount McKinley. The order, fulfilling a campaign promise, reverses a 2015 decision by President Barack Obama to adopt the name used by Alaska Natives for centuries.

The executive order states that the name change honors President William McKinley, though he never visited the mountain and has no significant historical connection to Alaska. The surrounding national park will retain the name “Denali National Park and Preserve.”

Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) supported the renaming effort. The order mandates that the Secretary of the Interior reinstate the name “Mount McKinley” within 30 days and update the Geographic Names Information System accordingly.

The decision has drawn sharp criticism. Athan Manuel, director of the Sierra Club’s land protection program, denounced the move as a “culture war stunt” that ignores the wishes of Alaska Natives and centuries of tradition. The Koyukon people have called the mountain Denali for generations.

This action comes alongside other controversial pronouncements from President Trump, including his announced intention to rename the Gulf of Mexico the “Gulf of America.” He also reiterated his plans to address illegal immigration and deport millions of undocumented immigrants.
