TIRUCHI, January 21, 2025 – Traders’ associations in Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu, have urged Chief Minister M.K. Stalin to fulfill his election promise of establishing a new district with Kumbakonam as its headquarters. In a resolution passed at a recent meeting, the Kumbakonam unit of Tamil Nadu Vanigar Sangankalin Peramaippu and the Federation of All Traders Associations of Kumbakonam reiterated the CM’s pledge and demanded immediate action.

The resolution also addressed several other concerns. The associations called on the central government to simplify GST return filings, eliminate penalties for minor clerical errors, and cease issuing notices for outdated accounts. They further pressed for the swift renovation of Kumbakonam Railway Station ahead of the 2028 Mahamagam festival, urging the allocation of funds for track doubling and a new railway line.

State government action was also requested, including the appointment of a nodal officer and the allocation of funds to various departments for Mahamagam preparations. The establishment of a local HR&CE Department office was also sought. Finally, the meeting criticized recent increases in property and other taxes imposed by the Kumbakonam Corporation, citing hardship for traders already struggling with the rise of online commerce.
