Tue Jan 21 21:44:25 IST 2025: ## Telangana Demands Larger Share of Krishna River Water

**Hyderabad, January 21, 2025** – The Telangana government renewed its demand for a larger share of Krishna River water at a Krishna River Management Board (KRMB) meeting held Tuesday. Telangana insists on 71% of the water allocated to the combined Andhra Pradesh state by the Krishna Water Disputes Tribunal (KWDT), based on catchment area, or at least 50% until KWDT-II adjudicates the shares.

The meeting, chaired by KRMB Chairman Atul Jain, saw heated discussions on water allocation, budget, telemetry equipment installation, and dam safety. Telangana’s Irrigation Secretary, Rahul Bojja, protested against the current 66:34 water sharing ratio (Andhra Pradesh:Telangana), arguing it was a temporary measure agreed upon only for one year post-bifurcation. He emphasized Telangana’s larger catchment area warrants a higher share.

Telangana also raised concerns over Andhra Pradesh’s plans to divert Godavari River water to the Krishna and Penna basins, demanding the KRMB obtain complete details of these plans. Andhra Pradesh, however, opposed any change to the existing ratio, promising a response regarding telemetry installation within a week.

The KRMB Chairman stated that increasing Telangana’s water share is impossible until KWDT-II completes its adjudication. Until then, the current sharing practice will continue. Other issues discussed included the installation of telemetry equipment at 11 key locations, the withdrawal of CRPF personnel from the Nagarjunasagar dam, and repairs to the dams’ sluices.
