**Beijing, January 21, 2025** – A ceasefire agreement between Myanmar’s military and the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA) has been reached, according to China’s Foreign Ministry. The agreement, effective January 18th, follows talks brokered by China in Kunming and halts fighting near the China-Myanmar border.
The MNDAA, an ethnic Chinese armed group and part of the Three Brotherhood Alliance, has been engaged in conflict with the Myanmar military since the military coup in February 2021. Their recent offensives, launched in October 2023, raised concerns in China about instability along its shared border. China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Mao Ning, emphasized that the ceasefire serves the common interests of all parties in Myanmar and regional countries, contributing to border security and stability. China has pledged continued support for the peace process in northern Myanmar.
This is the second ceasefire China has brokered in the region; a previous agreement in January 2024 proved short-lived. Analysts believe China’s concern stems from the potential disruption to trade and investment caused by escalating conflict near its border and the anti-junta forces’ advance towards Mandalay.
