**Chennai, India (January 21, 2025)** – A new exhibition, “City of Hope: Gandhi, King, and the 1968 Poor People’s Campaign,” opened Monday at the Anna Centenary Library in Chennai. Organized by the U.S. Consulate General Chennai in collaboration with the Meridian International Centre and ReReeti Foundation, the exhibit is part of the 2025 Chennai Photo Biennale.

The exhibition highlights Mahatma Gandhi’s profound influence on the American Civil Rights movement and Martin Luther King Jr.’s vision for economic justice and human rights. Tamil Nadu School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi inaugurated the event, emphasizing the need for the exhibition to inspire action and carry Gandhi and King’s message to future generations.

Aaron Bryant, museum curator at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture, a guest of honor, underscored King’s deep appreciation for Gandhian principles. The exhibit’s unique use of corrugated boxes to display posters symbolizes the campaign’s origins in the struggles of the impoverished.

The “City of Hope” exhibition will remain in Chennai until January 30th before traveling to Mumbai, Hyderabad, New Delhi, and Kolkata.
