**Manchester, England** – Manchester City have bolstered their defensive ranks with the signing of 20-year-old Uzbekistani defender Abdukodir Khusanov from Ligue 1 side Lens. The highly-rated youngster has penned a four-and-a-half-year contract and will wear the number 45 shirt.
Khusanov, a rising star who made history as the first Uzbekistani player in Ligue 1, becomes the first player from Uzbekistan to play in the Premier League. (Note: Peter Odemwingie, born in Uzbekistan, previously played in the Premier League, but holds Nigerian nationality). He has already earned 18 caps for his national team.
The young defender expressed his excitement at joining the reigning Premier League champions, stating his eagerness to learn from manager Pep Guardiola and play alongside some of the world’s best players. Khusanov’s arrival offers Guardiola added versatility in defense, where City have utilized eight different centre-back pairings this season.
While Khusanov is accustomed to a three-man defense at Lens, he will need to adapt to City’s four-man backline and their possession-based style of play. However, his strong passing ability is expected to aid a smooth transition. His signing adds depth and competition to City’s defensive options.
