LYNCHBURG, VA – Liberty University marked Martin Luther King Jr. Day with its annual “Celebrate Unity” event, honoring King’s legacy and promoting racial harmony. The event, held January 20th, 2025, in the Montview Alumni Ballroom, featured music from LU Praise, a recitation of King’s “I Have a Dream” speech by students, and a keynote address by Senior Pastor John Dupin of Waymaker Church.
Pastor Dupin’s message focused on the importance of spiritual friendship as a path to overcoming prejudice and achieving racial unity. He drew parallels between the unlikely friendship of Billy Graham and Martin Luther King Jr. and the biblical example of David and Jonathan, highlighting the power of mutual respect and shared faith in fostering genuine connection. He emphasized that actively pursuing friendships with people from diverse backgrounds is crucial for breaking down barriers and achieving Dr. King’s vision.
The event also included a call to action, encouraging students to participate in Liberty University’s annual Serve Lynchburg event on April 26th as a practical demonstration of unity and service to the community. Liberty University President Dondi E. Costin offered a closing prayer. The university offers a wide range of undergraduate and graduate programs, both residential and online, emphasizing a strong Christian foundation alongside academic excellence and opportunities for student involvement in athletics, ministry, and recreational activities.
