**JAKARTA, Indonesia (January 21, 2025)** – At least 16 people are dead and nine remain missing following devastating flash floods and landslides in Central Java Province, Indonesia. Torrential rains on Monday triggered rivers to overflow, sweeping through nine villages in Pekalongan regency. Mud, rocks, and trees cascaded down mountainsides, burying homes and causing widespread destruction.
The worst-hit village, Petungkriyono, saw the recovery of at least 16 bodies by Tuesday, according to Bergas Catursasi, head of the local Disaster Management Agency. Rescue efforts are ongoing to locate the nine missing villagers. Ten injured individuals were rescued and transported to nearby hospitals.
Seasonal rains, common in Indonesia from October to March, frequently cause flooding and landslides across the archipelago. The nation’s geography, with millions residing in mountainous areas or near floodplains, exacerbates the risk of such disasters.
