**PEKALONGAN, Central Java, Indonesia** – At least 16 people are dead and 10 injured following a devastating landslide in Pekalongan, Central Java, Indonesia. The disaster, triggered by heavy rains on Tuesday, has left three others missing, with authorities warning that the downpour is expected to continue for several days, hampering rescue efforts.
Local news footage shows widespread destruction, with homes partially buried under mud and debris, and vehicles submerged. Two bridges have also been damaged, and roads are impassable due to rubble and rocks.
Police Chief Doni Prakoso of Pekalongan told Metro TV that rescue workers are focusing on locating at least five missing individuals. However, Bergas Catursasi Penanggungan, an official with the Central Java disaster agency, stated that access to the affected area is severely hampered, delaying the search. He added that volunteers are assisting rescue workers, and heavy machinery will be deployed to help excavate survivors buried under thick soil. Penanggungan expressed concern about the ongoing rain, stating, “Time is limited due to the weather; we are racing against the weather.”
Indonesia frequently experiences landslides during its rainy season (November-April), though recent years have seen weather-related disasters outside this period. This latest tragedy follows a December incident where flash floods killed 10 on Java, and a November incident in North Sumatra that claimed at least 29 lives.
