**Chennai, India (Jan 21, 2025)** – Hotel Maris, a Chennai landmark on Cathedral Road, recently celebrated its 50th anniversary. The hotel, known for its affordable rates, long-serving staff, and vegetarian cuisine served on banana leaves, opened its doors on January 15, 1975.
The hotel’s founding story is a fascinating blend of family history and entrepreneurial spirit. It began with Maria Pillai, the grandfather of the current Managing Director, Anand Rengaswami. Pillai initially worked as a “kangani,” recruiting laborers for Ceylon’s tea estates. After Ceylon’s independence and the subsequent nationalization of tea estates, Pillai’s son, Rengaswami Pillai, relocated to Madras seeking new opportunities.
With the help of Ramakrishna Aithala, owner of Hotel Swagath, Rengaswami Pillai established Hotel Maris. The hotel was built on land belonging to The Hindu family, replacing a small restaurant. Renowned architect Atchyut R. Chundur, responsible for several other prominent hotels in the city, designed the building.
The hotel’s inauguration saw Rengaswami Pillai handing the key to a room to his father, Maria Pillai, a symbolic passing of the torch. Hotel Maris quickly gained popularity for its affordable prices, friendly staff, and its unique features, including a circular events space (since demolished) that became a popular filming location. The name “Maris,” initially causing some confusion with Stella Maris College, was revealed to be derived from the Goddess Mariamman, reflecting the family’s devotion.
Today, Hotel Maris stands as a testament to its founders’ vision and a cherished part of Chennai’s history. The hotel’s enduring legacy is a reflection of its commitment to affordability and its warm, personalized service.
