Tue Jan 21 10:20:00 UTC 2025: ## Djokovic Boycotts Interview After Broadcaster’s Anti-Serbian Remarks

**MELBOURNE, Australia** – Novak Djokovic, the 24-time Grand Slam champion, boycotted his customary post-match interview at the Australian Open, protesting comments made by Australian broadcaster Tony Jones. Jones, a Channel 9 commentator, had heckled Serbian fans during a news segment, calling Djokovic overrated and a “has-been,” and urging them to “kick him out.”

Following an outcry, including a statement from Djokovic himself, Jones issued a public apology on Channel 9’s “Today” show. He admitted his comments, initially intended as banter, crossed a line, particularly the “kick him out” remark, which was viewed as a reference to Djokovic’s controversial exclusion from the 2022 Australian Open due to his unvaccinated status. Jones stated that he had contacted Djokovic’s camp 48 hours prior to apologize for any perceived disrespect. Tennis Australia also issued a statement confirming Djokovic’s acceptance of the apology and his focus on the tournament.

Djokovic, who previously stated he experiences trauma related to his 2022 expulsion from Melbourne, explained his boycott in a social media video and post-match press conference. This is not the first instance of Jones’ conduct being called into question during the tournament. American tennis player Danielle Collins also criticized Jones for labelling her a “brat” on a radio segment.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, while declining to comment directly on the matter, emphasized the importance of respect in the context of the incident.

Djokovic is set to face Carlos Alcaraz in the quarterfinals. The incident has overshadowed the tennis, highlighting the ongoing tensions surrounding Djokovic’s past and the role of sports commentary in fostering a respectful atmosphere.
