**Davos, Switzerland** – Indian space surveillance and intelligence firm Digantara is generating significant buzz at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos. Founded by 26-year-old Anirudh Sharma, the company’s “Mission SCOT” – a successful project to track space objects – has garnered praise from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and highlighted India’s growing prowess in the space sector.
Sharma, who initially lacked a background in space technology, conceived the idea of tracking space debris after a student satellite project was damaged by orbital debris. This experience spurred the development of Digantara’s technology, which creates detailed maps of space, tracking individual objects to aid in satellite navigation and operations.
Digantara’s technology has significant national security implications. The company uses its tracking capabilities to monitor the movements of adversary satellites, providing crucial intelligence to authorities. This includes predicting satellite passes over specific regions and assessing the proximity of foreign satellites to Indian assets.
The company, which has secured funding from Sequoia Capital India (now Peak 15 Partners) and Kalari Capital, employs a diverse team of 100 people, including experienced former ISRO scientists and a 76-year-old advisor with US government experience.
Sharma emphasized the growing need for space traffic management, mirroring air traffic control systems, due to the increasing number of commercial satellites entering orbit. Digantara’s work, he stated, is vital for ensuring safe and efficient utilization of space. The company’s success at Davos underscores India’s ambition to become a global leader in sustainable development and technological innovation, a key theme of India’s participation in the WEF meeting.
