**Kolkata, January 20, 2025** – The life imprisonment sentence handed down to Sanjay Roy for the rape and murder of a doctor at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital has sparked widespread outrage. The victim’s parents, along with the Chief Minister and various civil society groups, expressed their disappointment, arguing the crime warranted the death penalty.
Roy, a former civic police volunteer, was convicted on January 18th. While the prosecution and the victim’s family pleaded for capital punishment, citing the case as “rarest of the rare,” Additional District and Session Judge Anirban Das deemed it did not meet the necessary criteria.
The victim’s mother criticized the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for its handling of the case, alleging its failure to prove the “rarest of the rare” status. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee echoed these sentiments, stating that a state police investigation would have likely resulted in a death sentence, pointing to three other cases where the state police secured capital punishment within 54-60 days. She also accused the central government of deliberately removing the case from state jurisdiction.
While the Leader of Opposition, Suvendu Adhikari, acknowledged the judge’s discretion, he also noted the public’s dissatisfaction with the verdict. He refuted allegations of CBI negligence.
West Bengal Governor C. V. Ananda Bose, in a statement, acknowledged the importance of punishment but stressed the need to address the broader societal issues contributing to violence against women. He emphasized that severe punishment alone cannot solve the underlying problem of rising violence. Protests by doctors and civil society groups continue to express their discontent with the relatively lenient sentence.
