**Kolkata, India** – Sanjay Roy, the former civic volunteer convicted of the rape and murder of a 31-year-old doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, has been sentenced to life imprisonment. The sentencing, delivered today at a local Kolkata court, concluded a case that shocked the nation.
Roy, who maintained his innocence throughout the trial, was found guilty last Saturday under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) related to rape, causing death, and murder. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which investigated the case, had argued for the death penalty, classifying the crime as “rarest of rare.” However, Additional District and Sessions Judge Anirban Das of the Sealdah court deemed the case did not meet the criteria for capital punishment.
Besides the life sentence, Roy was fined Rs 50,000. The court also ordered the West Bengal government to pay Rs 17 lakh in compensation to the victim’s family. The victim’s father expressed relief at the court’s decision, stating that justice had been served.
The gruesome crime occurred on August 9, 2023, when the doctor’s semi-naked body was discovered on the third floor of the hospital’s seminar hall. Roy was apprehended the following day. The case sparked widespread outrage and raised serious concerns about the safety and security of healthcare workers in the state.
