Sun Jan 19 05:43:59 UTC 2025: **Thousands Protest Trump’s Inauguration in Washington**
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Thousands of protesters gathered in Washington D.C. on January 18, 2025, to demonstrate against the upcoming inauguration of Donald Trump as the 47th President of the United States. The “People’s March,” a coalition of non-profit organizations including Sakhi for South Asian Survivors, organized the demonstration, echoing similar protests held during Trump’s first inauguration in 2017.
Protesters, carrying anti-Trump signs and banners, voiced opposition to Trump’s policies and those of his allies, including Elon Musk. The march, which comprised three separate rallies converging near the Lincoln Memorial, featured chants such as “F**k Trump!”, “Trans Lives Matter!”, and “We cannot be silent!”. Participants cited concerns over issues including women’s rights, immigration, and LGBTQ+ rights as their motivations for protesting.
Brittany Martinez, a protest attendee, told USA TODAY that she participated to support women’s equality and immigration rights, feeling her voice was not being heard. The People’s March organizers stated that mass protests are a powerful way to resist what they see as fascism. Similar, though smaller, demonstrations took place in other cities, including New York, Seattle, and Chicago.
Law enforcement officials anticipate further protests and events throughout the weekend leading up to Monday’s inauguration. The inauguration ceremony itself has been moved indoors, according to reports. Trump’s administration is also reportedly planning a large-scale immigration raid in Chicago.
