Mon Jan 20 15:18:37 UTC 2025: ## Thiruvananthapuram Allocates ₹17 Crore for Amayizhanjan Canal Restoration

**THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, January 20, 2025** – The Kerala State government has announced a significant ₹17 crore investment towards the restoration of the Amayizhanjan canal in Thiruvananthapuram. This follows the tragic death of a sanitation worker in July 2024, who perished after falling into a garbage-choked section of the canal. The incident highlighted the urgent need for canal cleanup and repair.

The latest allocation includes ₹12 crore for rebuilding protective walls along the canal downstream from the Nellikuzhi bridge, according to Water Resources Minister Roshy Augustine. An additional ₹5.54 crore has been earmarked for fencing along the Pazhavangadi stretch to prevent further waste dumping.

Previous funding rounds already committed ₹25 crore for canal reconstruction and desiltation from Akkulam to Kannamoola, along with ₹63 lakh for clearing a 117-meter-long tunnel section under railway tracks. This tunnel clearance alone removed 1,500 cubic meters of silt and waste. Remaining silt on the canal banks will be removed once dried.

The Amayizhanjan canal, a vital drainage system spanning 12 kilometers, has suffered from years of encroachment and waste disposal, severely impacting water flow. The recent tragedy served as a catalyst for renewed action to address the canal’s deteriorating condition.
