**Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh:** A large fire ripped through a campsite at the ongoing Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj on Sunday evening, destroying six tents and 40 temporary shelters. The blaze, which originated in the kitchen of the Geeta Press camp, left one person with minor injuries while escaping. No fatalities were reported.
Satellite imagery from January 17th, obtained from Maxar Technologies, shows the Geeta Press campsite located near a railway bridge in sector 19, close to the river. The images, taken days before the incident, clearly depict the area’s layout and the density of tents.
The Maha Kumbh Mela, which began on January 13th and continues until February 26th, is expected to draw an estimated 45 crore visitors. Authorities have deployed extensive resources, including eight new pontoon bridges, over 102 parking zones accommodating 5.5 lakh vehicles, 550 shuttle buses, and AI-enabled CCTV cameras for security. The Uttar Pradesh Fire and Emergency Services Department has invested Rs 131.48 crore in fire safety measures, deploying 350 firefighting vehicles and 2,000 personnel, including four advanced articulating water towers for high-reach firefighting.
While the cause of the fire is yet to be determined, the incident highlights the challenges of managing safety and logistics at such a massive religious gathering. Investigations are underway.
