NEW YORK — Amidst the tumultuous weekend surrounding a U.S. ban on TikTok and its subsequent partial restoration, Instagram announced the upcoming release of its new video editing app, “Edits.” The app, detailed by Instagram Head Adam Mosseri, is slated for a February release (though the Apple App Store lists March 13th) and will offer features including 10-minute video creation in 1080p resolution, AI animation, generative captions, and various overlays. The app will be initially available on the Apple App Store, with a Google Play Store release to follow.
The launch comes on the heels of a legally mandated ban on TikTok and ByteDance’s CapCut video editing app, implemented Sunday due to concerns over national security and data sharing with the Chinese government. President-elect Donald Trump, who previously supported the ban, issued a statement and social media post indicating that companies assisting in the restoration of TikTok would face no penalties, leading to TikTok’s announcement that it was “in the process of restoring service.” However, the ban on CapCut and other ByteDance-owned platforms remains in effect, leaving the status of these apps uncertain.
Mosseri positioned “Edits” as a robust alternative, emphasizing its mobile-first design and focusing on creating compelling creative tools for video makers across platforms. He clarified that “Edits” will initially launch with a limited feature set, promising future updates and improvements. The app will allow users to create and edit videos, share directly to Instagram, and access Instagram Reels analytics.
