**Mumbai, India** – The man accused of stabbing Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan six times during a suspected burglary attempt has been arrested, Mumbai Police announced Sunday. Shariful Islam Shehzad, a Bangladeshi national living illegally in India, was apprehended in Thane after a multi-day manhunt.
Police tracked Shehzad down after he used Google Pay to purchase a paratha for breakfast. This digital payment transaction, along with CCTV footage and other investigative leads, enabled officers to pinpoint his location. He had previously worked at the restaurant where he made the purchase. Police are also investigating a man named Pandey, who reportedly employed Shehzad.
Shehzad evaded capture for several days, moving between various locations in Mumbai, including Bandra (where the attack occurred), Dadar, Worli, Andheri, and finally Thane. He initially fled the scene after allegedly climbing through air conditioning ducts to reach Khan’s 12th-floor apartment.
The attack occurred early Thursday morning. Shehzad allegedly entered the building by scaling a neighboring building’s wall and using a rear staircase. He is accused of stabbing Khan in the bedroom of his youngest son, Jehangir. Khan suffered six stab wounds, including one near his spinal cord that was described as life-threatening. He was rushed to Lilavati Hospital and underwent surgery. Doctors have confirmed he is recovering.
While Shehzad initially reportedly admitted to the crime, his lawyer claims he is innocent and a scapegoat. The lawyer also contends that police haven’t produced sufficient evidence to prove Shehzad’s nationality. Shehzad has been remanded to five days of police custody. The investigation continues, and police are exploring the possibility of accomplices.
