Sun Jan 19 19:27:31 UTC 2025: ## Djokovic Boycotts Channel 9 Interviews After Alleged Insults to Serbian Fans

**Melbourne, Australia –** Ten-time Australian Open champion Novak Djokovic has announced a boycott of interviews with Channel 9, the tournament’s official broadcaster, citing an alleged insult directed at him and Serbian fans by a “famous sports journalist” during a live broadcast.

Following his straight-sets victory over Jiri Lehecka in the Round of 16 on Sunday, Djokovic skipped his customary on-court interview. He subsequently took to social media to explain his actions, stating that he will refuse further interviews with Channel 9 until the journalist and the broadcaster issue a public apology. Djokovic apologized to Jim Courier, the intended interviewer, for the awkward situation.

“A journalist who works for Channel 9 in Australia made a mockery of Serbian fans and made insulting and offensive comments towards me,” Djokovic said in a video message. “Since then he chose not to issue any public apology. Neither did Channel 9. So since they are official broadcasters, I chose not to give interviews for Channel 9.”

Despite the controversy, Djokovic’s performance on the court remained unaffected. His win over Lehecka, lasting two hours and 39 minutes, propelled him into the quarterfinals, where he will face Carlos Alcaraz. This marks Djokovic’s 15th Australian Open quarterfinal appearance, equalling Roger Federer’s record. The Serbian star is also aiming to become the oldest man to win a Grand Slam title in the Open Era.

Djokovic insisted he holds no ill will towards the Australian public or Jim Courier, but feels his actions were justified given the lack of apology from Channel 9. The broadcaster has yet to respond publicly to Djokovic’s accusations. The ongoing dispute adds a layer of intrigue to Djokovic’s quest for an 11th Australian Open title and a record-extending 25th Grand Slam victory.
