Mon Jan 20 15:30:00 UTC 2025: **Senator Klobuchar to Oversee Trump’s Inauguration Despite Political Differences**
WASHINGTON D.C. – Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), despite not supporting President-elect Donald Trump, will preside over his inauguration on Monday. As chair of the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies, Klobuchar emphasized her role is to ensure a ceremony “worthy of our country and worthy of our leadership in the world,” regardless of her personal political views. She will be the sole Democrat to speak at the event, stating she is participating in her capacity as committee chair, upholding the tradition of a peaceful transfer of power.
This year’s ceremony, moved indoors to the Capitol rotunda due to extreme cold weather, will have a different tone than Klobuchar’s 2021 address introducing President Biden, which celebrated the nation’s resilience following the January 6th riot. This time, she plans to focus on the significance of the peaceful transition of power.
While Minnesota’s Republican congressional delegation will attend, the state’s Democratic representatives are divided. Sen. Tina Smith will be present, along with Reps. Angie Craig and Kelly Morrison. However, Reps. Ilhan Omar and Betty McCollum will remain in Minnesota for Martin Luther King Jr. Day events.
