**Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh –** A large fire broke out at the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, on Sunday afternoon, causing significant damage to tents in Sector 19. While the fire, initially believed to have been caused by a cylinder explosion, has been extinguished, authorities confirmed that no injuries were reported.
The incident occurred around 4:30 PM, quickly spreading to approximately 10 tents near the Gita Press area. Fire tenders and ambulances responded swiftly, bringing the blaze under control. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath visited the site and directed authorities to ensure the safety and well-being of pilgrims. He also confirmed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had contacted him regarding the incident.
ADG Bhanu Bhaskar stated that the fire was contained and all individuals are safe. Initial investigations suggest two or three cylinders exploded, triggering the fire. A full investigation into the cause is underway. Prayagraj DM Ravindra Kumar confirmed that the fire was extinguished and no casualties were reported. Medical teams remain on standby as a precaution.
Despite the incident, the Maha Kumbh Mela continues. Over 1.7 million pilgrims had already visited by 8:00 AM on Sunday, with millions more expected to attend upcoming key bathing dates. The Mela, which began on January 13th, is scheduled to conclude on February 26th.
