**Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh, January 21, 2025** – Hundreds protested in Sambhal district on Monday following the alleged custodial death of 35-year-old Irfan. The protests, which involved a gherao of the Raisatti Police outpost, led to increased police deployment as demonstrators demanded compensation and action against officers involved.
Irfan’s wife alleges he was taken into custody despite having health issues and was subsequently tortured to death. She stated that police ignored pleas to allow him to take his medication. Irfan had been detained following a complaint from a relative alleging unpaid debt.
However, Sambhal Superintendent of Police (SP) Krishna Kumar refuted claims of torture, suggesting Irfan died of a heart attack after taking medication at the outpost. He stated that Irfan’s son was present and confirmed his father’s need for medication.
Azad Samaj Party (ASP) president and Nagina MP Chandra Shekhar Azad called for a thorough investigation, stating the incident raises serious questions about law and order and the Yogi government’s handling of such cases. He emphasized the need for accountability. An autopsy has been conducted on Irfan’s body. The incident continues to spark outrage and calls for justice.
