**NEWARK, NJ** – The New Jersey Devils’ offensive struggles continued Sunday, as they fell to the Ottawa Senators 2-1, extending their winless streak to five games (0-3-2). For the eleventh consecutive game, the Devils failed to score more than three goals.
Tomas Tatar provided the lone goal for New Jersey, responding quickly to Zach Ostapchuk’s first NHL goal for Ottawa. Artem Zub’s goal early in the third period proved to be the game-winner for the Senators.
Despite the loss, there were some positive takeaways for the Devils. Coach Sheldon Keefe’s decision to match the line of Tomas Tatar, Curtis Lazar, and Nathan Bastian against Ottawa’s top line proved effective in limiting the Senators’ offensive opportunities. Through the first two periods, the Devils’ Lazar line outshot Ottawa’s top line significantly, registering six shots on goal while holding Ottawa’s top players scoreless.
The Devils dominated the shot count early, recording 17 shots in the first period alone – exceeding their total from the previous game against the Flyers. Goaltender Anton Forsberg was instrumental in keeping Ottawa in the game, particularly in the first period, where he faced relentless pressure from New Jersey.
While the Devils’ offense sputtered, their defensive performance showed improvement. They limited the Senators to few high-quality scoring chances. Justin Dowling returned to the lineup after missing Saturday’s game, while Brian Halonen was a healthy scratch. The Devils’ inability to convert their shot advantage, however, ultimately cost them the game. The team will look to break their slump in their next game.
