Sat Jan 18 18:02:26 UTC 2025: ## Gaza Ceasefire: A Fragile Peace After Months of Deadly Conflict
**Cairo, Egypt –** A ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, brokered by Qatar, is set to take effect on Sunday at 8:30 a.m. local time (0630 GMT), bringing a tentative end to 15 months of devastating conflict. However, the agreement remains precarious, with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu demanding the immediate release of the names of hostages to be released before the ceasefire proceeds. Hamas has yet to respond.
The announcement followed an emergency Israeli Cabinet meeting on the Jewish Sabbath, sparking a mix of relief and anxiety among families of hostages held in Gaza. The first phase of the ceasefire, lasting 42 days, will see the release of 33 hostages in exchange for 737 Palestinian prisoners. An additional 1,167 Gaza residents will also be freed. Palestinian prisoners convicted of deadly attacks will be exiled.
Despite the agreement, Israeli airstrikes continued on Saturday, resulting in the deaths of at least 23 Palestinians, including a family of four. Simultaneously, sirens blared across central and southern Israel following projectile launches from Yemen, attributed to Iran-backed Houthi rebels.
The prisoner exchange will begin at 4 p.m. (1400 GMT) Sunday, with the release of three female hostages. The remaining hostages will be released incrementally over the following five weeks. Israeli troops will withdraw to a buffer zone within Gaza, facilitating the return of displaced Palestinians. A surge in humanitarian aid is expected through the Rafah and Kerem Shalom crossings, although all incoming trucks will be subject to Israeli inspections.
The ceasefire’s second phase, addressing the remaining hostages, including Israeli soldiers, will be negotiated during the first 42 days. Hamas has indicated its willingness to continue negotiations only if a lasting ceasefire and full Israeli withdrawal are secured. The October 7, 2023 Hamas attack, which sparked the conflict, resulted in the deaths of approximately 1,200 Israelis and the capture of around 250 hostages. The Israeli offensive has claimed the lives of over 46,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza health officials. The fragile ceasefire offers a glimmer of hope but leaves much uncertainty for the future.
