**Tainan, Taiwan (January 21, 2024)** – A powerful 6.4 magnitude earthquake struck southern Taiwan early this morning at 00:17, causing significant damage and injuries. The epicenter was located in Dapeng Township, Chiayi County, at a shallow depth of 9.7 kilometers. The quake, felt as far north as Taipei, resulted in a maximum intensity of 6 (weak) in Dapeng Township. Tainan and Kaohsiung also experienced strong shaking, with intensities of 5 (weak).

Following the initial quake, two aftershocks measuring 4.2 and 4.3 magnitudes hit Nanhua District and Nanshi District in Tainan at 00:21 and 00:24 respectively.

The National Fire Agency reported that a house collapsed in Nanshi District, Tainan, trapping two individuals. Rescue efforts are underway. Further damage assessments are ongoing.
